What is the Kingdom of Heaven?

We don’t have kingdoms anymore, so what terminology would replace “the Kingdom of Heaven” in today’s phraseology?

Some would say the kingdom is the rule we would live by respecting the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Others might argue the term kingdom is more of a structure of laws that govern our behavior, so that the teachings of Jesus would be reflected in our laws and social codes. Some might even go so far as to suggest the word kingdom should be replaced by the word “government.” If that were the case, and here again people are serious about it, maybe the Kingdom of Heaven can be interpreted as spiritual hierarchy, or even a government by those in the heavens. Now is that so far fetched to think that might refer to extraterrestrials, aliens, angels, or whatever. Mmm! Maybe the idea of some sort of Galactic Federation isn’t so crazy after all.

Actually, I do not claim to know the answers. What do you think?

  1. I prefer to think of the Kingdom of God more as a community. Government is too hierarchical, and I don’t like fatherhood and brotherhood because of the gender bias. Not sure how aliens fit in, though ;)

  2. For me, “heaven” is just as the song says: a place on earth.

Maybe Hawaii or the mountains overlooking Malibu.

This is the closet to “heaven” I will ever get.
