So-called Christians and torture

•May 21, 2009 • 4 Comments

I’m one of those folks who has actually READ the 4 gospels, and I can assure you,
the pro-torture argument that Dick Cheney is making is at the opposite end of
the spectrum from what is revealed in those books.

Now (May 21) I’m astounded as Cheney once again defends torture on TV
(Chris Matthews show) and religious(?) leader Pat Roberston defends
Cheney! Unbelievable.
This is the “Pro-Life,” “Family Values,” “What would Jesus Do” crowd??
That is what I call hypocrisy, and delusion, if not deception.

I dunno . . . I kind of envision angels weeping over such distortions of truth.

Been away for a while

•May 18, 2009 • 4 Comments

Sorry I’ve been away for a while.

I guess I feel now that Obama is president the world has a good chance of surviving, and possibly even undoing the damage that the Bush administration has done to the country and the world.

Even if the war criminals are not going to jail, at least there is a discussion of their crimes, and Cheney is pathetically trying to defend his torture stance. Yeah, keep THAT argument going, Dick, and we’ll see the GOP sink to under 10% popularity rating.

Meanwhile – Question: What’s with John Boener’s hair?

Do the math

Let’s see . . . 5% of the population thinks Elvis is still alive somewhere; 2% believe they have been impregnated by space aliens; 3% think the world is flat; 3% think smoking is good for you; 4% think the moon landing was a hoax; etc., etc. – - anyway, when you add all those people up you get the 25% of the population that thinks Bush was a good president.

End of the Reign of Evil

•January 16, 2009 • 2 Comments

Thank GOD, Bush is soon out of the White House, and his destructive reign of terror against the US Constitution and the will of the American people is just about over. Now, if there is any justice in the world, Bush and Cheney and Alberto Gonzales will be hauled into court as war criminals.

What is the Kingdom of Heaven?

•December 4, 2008 • 2 Comments

We don’t have kingdoms anymore, so what terminology would replace “the Kingdom of Heaven” in today’s phraseology?

Some would say the kingdom is the rule we would live by respecting the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Others might argue the term kingdom is more of a structure of laws that govern our behavior, so that the teachings of Jesus would be reflected in our laws and social codes. Some might even go so far as to suggest the word kingdom should be replaced by the word “government.” If that were the case, and here again people are serious about it, maybe the Kingdom of Heaven can be interpreted as spiritual hierarchy, or even a government by those in the heavens. Now is that so far fetched to think that might refer to extraterrestrials, aliens, angels, or whatever. Mmm! Maybe the idea of some sort of Galactic Federation isn’t so crazy after all.

Actually, I do not claim to know the answers. What do you think?

What is the Kingdom of Heaven?

Rescue the Big Three Automakers

•November 18, 2008 • 3 Comments

Looks like the oil industry has record profits in the billions.
(We’re talking several hundred BILLION dollars!)
The big three auto makers, Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors, are asking congress for a bailout.

Hey, I’m no genius, but why don’t we make the windfall profits taxes on the oil companies come out to about $25 billion and give THAT money to the auto industry? Certainly the two cannot live without each other, and certainly the oil companies can afford it.

Go figure!

Obama impressive on 60 Minutes

•November 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Obama was VERY impressive in his 60 Minutes interview this evening. He is obviously thoughtful, intelligent, and personable. His answers reflected a grasp of the gravity and significance of the decisions he will have to make in his first days in office. He has a scope and depth of knowledge on the key issues of the economy, military power, and the will of the American people, both in the present situation, and with the backdrop of our national history.

We’ve heard people commend the current president as “someone you could sit down and have a beer with.” Fortunately, most Americans feel the leader of the free world should be perhaps a bit more intelligent than the average Joe, or the typical hockey mom, for that matter. I would hope the president would be MUCH smarter than I am, with a thorough knowledge of our Constitution, our national priorities, and a full comprehension of the political atmosphere. What a refreshing impression Obama made on 60 minutes, showing his character, sagacity, and intelligence.

Bush: More deregulation

•October 31, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Lame Duck Bush, in his final days, is pushing for even more deregulation of industries that cause pollution.  Even as the GOP ship sinks, he continues to drill holes in the hull.

According to government watchdog group OMB Watch, the Bush administration is currently working on dozens of regulations that would loosen rules on emissions of pollutants, mining exploration and commercial fishing, and could have a lasting impact for years to come.

“It is impressive in how many different issues this sort of campaign covers,” OMB Watch’s Matthew Madia told reporters.

“It’s environmental regulations, it’s workers’ safety, it’s reproductive health, it’s traffic safety, but the common theme is in a lot a cases the Bush administration is trying to remove restrictions on business and allow them to operate without any kind of government oversight,” said Madia, a regulatory expert.

On this evening’s news, Katie Couric called the GOP “toxic”, and it is
stories like the above that have caused voters to turn against the
Republicans.

World: Apology for the Bush years

•October 27, 2008 • 7 Comments

Open letter to citizens of the world.

Weeping for the peace that might have been

Weeping for the peace that might have been

We Americans want to apologize for the tragedy of the Bush years.

As we approach the termination of the worst U.S. presidency in our history, we, the common people of this once great nation, apologize for the crimes the Bush administration has perpetrated on the world. We ask for your forgiveness, as we step towards the brink of electing a true patriot who holds dear the ideals that America once stood for. With Barack Obama as our new leader, we once again have hope for regaining the role of America as the beacon of justice in a peace-hungry world.

We apologize for invading other countries.
We apologize for our role in global warming.
We apologize for advocating torture and preemptive war.
We apologize for abandoning the Geneva Conventions.
We apologize for spying on people.
We apologize for economic coercion.
We apologize for alienating our fellow citizens of the world.

We sincerely hope that the new president will usher in an era of peace and understanding.
Thank you for your patience over the past 8 years, and God bless you.

Obama: First order of business

Obama: First order of business

I can only hope Barack Obama will take time to reassure the world when he takes over as president.

“To all the nations of the world: I apologize.”
“I apologize for the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war.”
“I am sorry we invaded another country in order to confiscate their oil.”
“To all the people of the world who were killed, imprisoned, tortured and abused by the aggressive policies of George Bush, I offer my sincere apologies, regret, and sympathy. I want to assure you that with me in office, the U.S. will no longer distort the Constitution, ignore the Geneva Conventions, and disregard its friends in other countries.”
